This post was a Tide Spin post. Tide Spin has now merged with Pressbox to create Tide Cleaners.
How did you come about working for Tide Spin?
I was fortunate to work with a small team that came up with the idea and pitched it to leadership.
What were you doing before this?
I’ve been with P&G my entire career...now 17+ years. I spent the first 8 years as a Business Analyst before moving into Brand Management. I worked on Crest and Oral-B for 4 years, then spent 2 years in Minneapolis supporting P&G’s Laundry & Household cleaning businesses at Target. After that I returned to Cincinnati in 2014 where I had responsibility for global innovation on Tide. This is where we came up with the idea for Tide Spin.
Any entrepreneur ventures of your own?
In college, I built a system for our fraternity house to exchange used textbooks. Money was tight in college, and I was very frustrated by the spread in used textbook pricing between what the bookstore sold them for versus what they paid you for them. Being a Mgmt Info Systems major at the University of Illinois, I build a front-end and back-end database through MS Access (it was an old database application that used to be in the Microsoft office suite). The system allowed members of our 100 person house to enter their courses/professors each semester so you could pair up with someone and buy their used textbooks from them before they sold them back to the bookstore at the end of the semester.
What’s your role at Tide Spin and what do you do on a daily basis?
I’m the CEO so I help lead and guide the team to ensure we are making progress against our top priorities. Since we have a small team I end up covering a range of areas such as finance and accounting; and HR. Ultimately, my goal is to guide the team’s learning so that we determine the playbook and demonstrate the long term viability of this business model for Procter & Gamble.
What do you like about working at Tide Spin?
I feel like I’ve got the best job at P&G. I found a sweet spot where I’m leading a startup, but have the backing and resources of a Fortune 50 company. I’ve been able to create something that will leave a lasting legacy and have had full support from leaders for our team to figure it out on our own. I’ve been blessed as well with a superbly skilled, enthusiastic, and diverse team too.
What’s are some of the ways you enjoy Life Over Laundry?
I have a wonderful family that keeps me busy and fills my heart. Jill and I have been married for almost 12 years (sometimes it feels like 13 ) and we have 3 energetic, playful, and loving boys (9, 7, and 3 years old). We like to stay busy and spend as much time outdoors as possible. When I break away, I love to play golf (currently hold the trophy from my annual golf match with my brothers) or pretend that there’s still a chance that I can become a rock n roll drummer. I’ve also relished being in Chicago the last 2 years so that I can reconnect with all my friends from U of I.
Besides Tide Spin, any other Life Hacks you do?
I try to be as efficient and stingy with my time as possible. I never let a thought or idea escape my mind so I’m constantly scribbling in my notebook or capturing notes in my phone.
With three young kids at home how do you balance family with growing a business?
It’s hard and I just accept that I can only do my best. Fortunately, Jill is great about taking on the load and handling most responsibilities at home. Her greatest gift is she’s an amazing communicator so she’s very clear when and where she needs my help. I really value family dinners so I always get on the train so I can be home by 6:15 to be with them each evening. When I’m at home I try my best to put my phone down so that my attention and focus is with the family. I”m admittedly terrible at this though so Jill is still working on me.
